The Distillery District || Toronto


Wandering through the streets of Toronto one finds many interesting sites; after all, it is a fairly large metropolitan area, covering an area of 630 square kilometres (243 sq mi), so even if you've lived here all your life you can still miss a few things. So we recently embarked out into the urban wilds, cameras in hand, facing the frigid wind, to explore some of the areas not familiar to us. Here's a few of the photos I took today; my fingers are still numb!

Most of these were taken in the Distillery District, east of downtown Toronto.  The area is dotted with historic old buildings, factories, and of course, breweries, bars and shops. 



There's plenty of interesting people down there too, like this man, who said he had a vision one day and decided to spread the word of God to everyone on the streets of Toronto ...


The Streets are narrow down here, and the houses are old, tilting, leaning, creaking old things ...




 And sometimes you find funny things on the lawns of these old places, like this giant sculpture of the Earth, with a 'For Rent' sign on it, which is always good for social commentary ...


On our way from point "A" to point "B" we saw this lovely artifact, an old Winnebago, at least forty years old, sitting there in a weedy old lot. It looked so forlorn, as if it's useful life had come to an end. I took pity on it and photographed it for posterity ...


Briefly brought to life, it butted up against my friends Neon, and it's old snarl seemed to come back to life. One last flit of light in it's old headlights ...


Even wedding photos are taken here; the red brick roads and the wonderful old facades make wonderful shots ...


There is a wonderful equality on the streets of this district: cars and bikes share the roads, sometimes flashing by so close they could touch each other with an outstretched hand ...


Signs, signs, everywhere signs, but we ignore them in search of adventure and creativity, even on a dangerous freeway turnpike...


The lovely and historic 'main drag' of the Distillery District ...













On the way home: some irreverent moments to warm our frosty souls. That's me in the reflection of the old window, taking a self-portrait ...


My friend Alex, recreating the cover of Abbey Road, and not quite making it ...


There's something inherently creepy about old red doors, isn't there?


We began this photo journey at the bottom of the stairs, and so we end at the top.  Ironic, isn't it?
